Collaborating within the primary New York and Boston creative hubs, Michael Adkins has focused on formalizing a singular direction in modern improvisational music. Holding an advanced Doctor of Musical Arts degree, his career directly fuses uncompromising performance discipline with deep-dive music and community development.

His extensive career includes recording, performing, and advancing linear concepts alongside iconic historical figures such as Paul Motian, Dave Holland, Larry Grenadier, Bob Moses, and Randy Brecker. These direct field associations served as a foundational catalyst for his intensive primary research, culminating in over 25 comprehensive interviews with descendants and colleagues of master mentors.

Currently, Adkins steers both his freelance performance collaborations and a dedicated 501(c)(3) community-based music program. His work remains anchored around "Structural Improvisation and Jazz Traditions"—a performance philosophy that approaches spontaneous acoustic expression as a highly rigorous, non-linear blueprint.

“The result of these masters interacting is a recording that is easily one of the high points of this year in jazz.”
